We did a quick tour around St. John before Christmas. From Francis Bay, one of our favorites, we motored to weather, being very careful to stay in US waters and not stray into the BVI. The slot between St. John and Great Thatch is pretty narrow and we had heard of a couple boats that had been fined for being in BVI waters, who's borders are closed due to Covid. We spent a couple nights in Hansen Bay, which was delightful and took the dinghy in to Coral Bay. We enjoyed a couple rum drinks at the Salty Mongoose but decided against a carry out pizza since it looked like it would be a wet ride back to the boat.
Great Lameshur Bay was next on our tour around St. John. There are limited mooring balls in Lameshur but we were there early enough to snag one. The next morning, we hiked from Great Lameshur to Reef Trail and then to the petroglyphs. The trail was overgrown (maybe it's not maintained in the summertime?) and the foliage was lush. In spite of the recent rain, the waterfall at the petroglyphs was just a trickle.
Finally, we had a beautiful sail along the south side of St. John and up to Caneel Bay where we picked up a mooring and took the dinghy in to Cruz Bay for some provisioning. What a beautiful island St. John is!
